New Refrigerator Received!

Wednesday - July 8, 2015

Great news!

Our food pantry has a new 49-cubic foot refrigerator courtesy of a Connecticut Food Bank Program Capacity Equipment Grant. The Connecticut Food Bank offered this opportunity through the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center in New London, which supplies us with food, including fresh fruits and vegetables.

In addition to the Food Center, local farms including Hart’s Greenhouse, LoPresti Farm, Malerba’s Farm, Orchard Hill Farm, and others generously supply large amounts of fresh produce. Supermarkets such as Stop & Shop kindly donate their excess produce. St. Mark Lutheran Church provides veggies regularly from their Community Garden, as does Small Potatoes from their Seeds to Soup Garden, and others.

Individuals also donate produce they have grown, adding to the quantity and variety available to pantry participants.

Previously, lack of cold storage meant that perishable fruits and vegetables had to be distributed as soon as they were received. The new refrigerator allows us to increase the amount of produce we acquire and distribute. We have been able to store kale, mangoes, apples, and pears, enabling us to offer them to pantry participants on multiple days.

As the warm weather arrives and more local produce becomes available, the refrigerator will be essential to keeping produce fresh.

Thank you to Connecticut Food Bank for making this opportunity available!
